Introduction.
Prior to the beginning of the Second World War, as Germany finalized the role of various AFVs within the Panzer-Division, the need for organic self-propelled artillery came to the forefront. One such design mounted the 10.5cm l.FH18 in a partially rotating turret on a chassis that superficially resembled Krupp¡¦s Pz.Kpfw.IV mittlerer Panzer. Several actually saw combat on the Ostfront beginning in the autumn of 1942 with Artillerie-Regiment 16 of the 16.Panzer-Division. Although an apparently efficient design, which carried nearly twice the basic ammunition load as the Wespe and was not burdened with the questionable need for a removable gun as in the Heuschrecke series, the project was terminated by Hitler in favor of the former in November of 1942.
