In 2002, with the ex formula 1 pilot Jean Alesi (with 201 Grand Prix behind him!), AMG got a very experienced driver for the team. It was already obvious at the start of the season in Hockenheim how motivated Alesi was to reach a high placing. The racer started in position 14 with enthusiasm and battled his way stubbornly to the front. Despite his efforts, Alesi, who according to his own statement classed Formula 1 as easier, was unable to beat the superior Abt TTs. Alesi came in third 10 seconds behind Aiello in Hockenheim, but ahead of his team mate the previous year's champion Bernd Schneider. Alesi proved his ambition and fighting spirit repeatedly during the season, which he finished in overall fourth place and behind Schneider as the second best Mercedes pilot.
