The USS Boxer was developed as the central strongpoint for the amphibious rapid strike troops of the US Navy and belongs to the Wasp Class (multi-purpose amphibious assault ship). The vessel went into service in February 1995 and can accommodate a crew of 1,077 and a maximum of 2,074 fully equipped soldiers. With regard to hardware and armament it is clear that the ship carries mainly aircraft and helicopters, often in the typical configuration of 30 helicopters and up to 8 Harrier vertical-take-off aircraft. In fact that is not as many aircraft as aboard traditional carriers, but in this case a number of landing craft can be carried in a floodable docking well in the stern. The main purpose of these ships is naturally to support landing operations by the US Navy/US Marines. However this type of ship is not only equipped to support fighting units, it can also be used for rescue or humanitarian missions.
