The Sauber Petronas C22 is the third car to be built under the leadership of Technical Director Willy Rampf. Compared to its predecessor, everything in the C22, which is 600 kg lighter, is new; even the proportions are completely different. In addition to improved aerodynamics, the increase in component rigidity and a more compact structure, in parallel with a reduction in weight, were important development targets. The new Petronas 03A engine and the redesigned gearbox also made their contribution. In the 2003 season, the Sauber Petronas team rely on the experienced Heinz-Harald Frentzen (7 points by the 11th race) and Nick Heidfeld (2 points), who has already done three years on the starting grid for Sauber.
