Developed in the sixties as a gigantic "flying crane" the US Army heavy lift helicopter CH-54 "Tarhe" was used all over the globe. The CH-54 A was built from 1964 onwards and can carry loads up to 9 tonnes, which would be beyond the capability of any other western helicopter, such as medical operating stations or bulky field howitzers. Nowadays they are used for a multitude of civil applications.
