The Challenger 1, in service since 1983, followed by the upgraded version 2, will play the role of the British land forces' main combat tank into the new millenium. The Challenger is equipped with the powerful 120 mm L11 A5 cannon and two 7.62 mm MGs together with state-of-the-art special armour. Driven by a Condor V-12 1200 bhp Diesel engine it develops a maximum speed of 56 km/h. The British infantrymen are equipped with the latest weapons and kit. With the new SA80 automatic rifle, the light machine gun (LSW), the heavy standard machine gun (GPMG) with tripod and LAW 80 anti-tank weapon, the infantrymen carry out their battle missions in companies or batallions, in close collaboration with the tank units in so-called "battle groups".
