The Churchill was used successfully by the Royal Engineers as an AVRE(Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) during the Normandy landings and the advance into Western Europe. There were numerous variants for mine clearance, vehicle recovery and bridge laying. A special design was the SBG (Small Box Girder) mobile bridge. With this bridge it was possible to cross trenches up towidth of 9.40 m and surmount vertical obstacles up to a height of 4.20.
