The new F/A-18E Super Hornet is the latest US Navy fighter/attack aircraft that replaces the F-14 and the older F/A-18 A and C. Shortly after going into service with the first units in 2002 it flew successful attack sorties during Operation Enduring Freedom in Iraq. Due to the use of JDAM and laser guided bombs it can strike enemy targets much more accurately and also has an extensive arsenal of guided missiles of the latest generation. The F/A-18E is in practice a completely new aircraft, the airframe of which is 30% larger than that of the F/A-18C. Other modifications include more powerful engines (GE F414 each with 98 kN thrust), more fuel capacity and longer range, together with state-of-the-art displays in the cockpit and the new APG-79 radar. Its operating radius for attack missions is 40% greater than that of its predecessors. It can carry 8 tonnes of armament and fuel tanks together with ECM pods on 11 external hardpoints.
