The Dragoons are one of the oldest of the French armed services. In the Napoleonic period 30 regiments were set up, who all wore green uniforms that were differentiated by the colours of the collars and cuffs. In addition some 15 regiments had horizontal or vertical jacket pockets. In 1812 the Dragoons received a similar waistcoat jacket to the infantry. That is no accident as the dragoons were originally infantry on horseback, which made them more manoeuvrable. The Dragoons were armed with the straight cut-and-thrust sword, a pistol and a 1777 model gun that was shorter than that of the infantry.
