Its capabilities range from passenger and rescue duties through transport flights, fire extinguishing to service as a flying crane. Mass production began in 1965 in the helicopter works at Kazan. By 31.12.1999 4066 of the Mi-8 had been built in a wide variety of versions, 1750 of which were sold in over 40 countries throughout the world.
