Welcome to the Stockton
Modellers June Newsletter of 2005. The summer
months are with us or should be soon which may
mean you spend much less time on your hobby. Dust
may begin to line your model trains and railway
track. So this issue we are spot lighting a track
cleaning pad.

Track Cleaning Pads
When
I first saw these little cleaning pads at the
Nurnberg Toy Fair this year I couldn’t see how
such a small and light assembly would do it’s
job. I watch the demos but until I’ve tried something
for myself - well I’m never quite certain. When
the samples arrived here and were tried on my
own railway all doubts were proved groundless.
The essence of this device is it’s
light weight and the fabric from which it is made.
The material is similar to the stuff used on those
clothes ‘brushes’ that pick all the bits up when
you brush in one direction and then dump them
back on your coat if you accidentally
brush in the wrong direction. No solvents are
needed and neither is extra weight - it works
as a glorified duster and at intervals the pad
can be cleared by blowing over it or flicking
with a fingernail - it is surprising how much
dust falls free when you do this.
It is dust in an unholy alliance
with excess oil from rolling stock that causes
the worst of dirt induced track problems and these
pads kill dust.
The
cleaning pads are not a substitute for high frequency
electronic track cleaners or abrasive track rubbers
but workirg in concert with these other methods,
they will make a very significant contribution
to keeping track clean. As always, dragging rakes
of old, plastic wheeled rolling stock with their
wheel treads thick With greasy muck, around a
layout is a recipe for problems — so integral
with any major track cleaning programme should
be checking wheels for dirt and ensuring that
bearings are not over-lubed.
Starting
with a clean sheet will enable the combination
of clear~ng devices to work more effectively and
greatly extend the intervals between major clean-ups.
The pad assembly is a “click-fit” onto bogie or
non-bogie metal axles, loco tenders are ideal
and if the fit is tight then a little file or
knifework will generally sort it. Full instructions
are of course included.
It’s a good idea to have these pads
fitted to more than one set of vehicles (I would
say that wouldn’t I!) but the more times the track,
is kissed by the cleaning fairy the better.

The Train Lantern
In a terrible accident
at a railroad crossing, a train smashed into a
car and pushed it nearly four hundred yards down
the track. Though no one was killed, the driver
took the train company to court.
At the trial, the engineer
insisted that he had given the driver ample warning
by waving his lantern back and forth for nearly
a minute. He even stood and convincingly demonstrated
how he'd done it. The court believed his story,
and the suit was dismissed.
"Congratulations,"
the lawyer said to the engineer when it was over.
"You did superbly under cross-examination."
"Thanks,"
he said, "but he sure had me worried."
"How's that?"
the lawyer asked.
"I was afraid
he was going to ask if the damned lantern was
lit!"
