The Japanese brand Nissan first participated in the Dakar Rally Raid in 2003 - considered the second most important motor sport competition, just behind the famous Japanese GT World Championship. Successfully taking 5th place with wins in five stages, Nissan showed potential first year. With the benefit of the 2003 experience behind them, some modifications made the 2004 vehicle more competitive. These modifications consisted of improving the bodywork aerodynamics, increasing the average speed of the 1750 kg pick-up to 190 km/h, and better driver visibility. The vehicle was better protected against the rocky stretches of the course, while retaining powerful 271 bhp 3.5 litre 6-cylinder engine. Colin McRae, the successful former WRC driver and World Champion took part in the Dakar Rally for the first time in 2004. His driving skills, even on unfamiliar sections, were demonstrated in two of the 17 stages, which he won expertly with the aid of his Swedish co-driver Tina Thorner.
