The nuclear powered submarines in the Oscar Class are among the fastest and most powerful combat submarines in the Russian fleet and are primarily designed to combat enemy aircraft carriers. These submarines reach speeds of over 30 knots. The Kursk went into service in 1995 and belonged to the First Submarine Flotilla of the North Sea Squadron. On 12th August 2000 a tragic accident occurred on board the "Kursk" in the Barents See in which 117 seamen died.
