SUPERQUICK and METCALFE
model card kits
Half the fun of a model
railway layout is choosing the locos and wagons, but
the other half is in designing the layout itself,
selecting the buildings and scenery.
Thankfully, the buildings need not
be either expensive or time consuming. Whilst good
quality ready built buildings are available, a very
professional effect can be achieved by using a card
kits such as one made by Superquick or Metcalfe.
Now, before you conjure up visions
of cornflake packets, glue and sticky back plastic
in Blue Peter tradition, you can be assured that the
card kits are a very different matter.
 The
Superquick kits are made in 5 or
6 colours and mounted on board to produce a tough
laminate about 1 mm thick The buildings come ready
cut and creased, and are flat packed. They are easy
to assemble and Super Phatic glue
is recommended to stick them together.
This is a special type of glue which
soaks into the card to form a thorough bond rather
than simply sticking the edges together. It is a tacky
glue which bonds quickly so that you do not have to
spend ages holding the pieces together whilst it sticks.
It is white but as it dries, it shrinks and becomes
clear though it does not become brittle. It comes
with a dispenser which delivers a bead of glue to
assist with accuracy.
There are three ranges in
00 gauge:
Railway Buildings Series A comprises
model rail and industrial buildings including a station
platform (A1);
Country Station Building(A4);
Signal Box (A6), and Water Tower and weighbridge (A8)
amongst others (12 in range altogether)
The Country Town Buildings
range includes kits of buildings found in
towns and villages such as a Police Station &
Library (B25); a Supermarket and shop (B27), the Village
School (B31), and terraced houses (B30). There are
16 in the range.
In the Low Relief
Buildings range, there is a hotel, offices
& restaurant (C1); Regency period shops and house
(C4),
and terraced houses,
backs and fronts (C5 & C6) Various kits can be
joined together to form a complete terrace row or
you can even add a corner shop on the end.
Metcalfe kits are
also excellent quality, being in full colour. The
buildings are pre-cut and creased ready for assembly
and have clear glazing sheets for the windows. There
are full instructions with each pack. In their 00
gauge there are houses, shops, low relief shops, town
and country buildings and railway buildings. There
is also a range of N gauge buildings in houses, shops,
industrial and railway kits.
